ASEAN Condemns Violence in Myanmar, Reaffirms Five-Point Consensus as Main Reference

Jakarta (ANTARA) - ASEAN has condemned the continuing violence against civilians in Myanmar and reaffirmed that the Five Point Consensus (5PC) remains the main reference for resolving the political crisis in the country.

This position was affirmed by ASEAN ministers in the Joint Communiqué of the Foreign Ministers’ Meeting following the 59th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Manila, the Philippines.

“We reaffirm our collective position that the 5PC remains the main reference in addressing the political crisis in Myanmar, and reiterate the relevant decisions of ASEAN leaders,” the communiqué stated, as quoted from the official ASEAN 2026 website on Friday.

ASEAN also condemned acts of violence affecting public facilities and urged all parties involved to take immediate concrete steps to end the violence indiscriminately, protect civilians, and create conditions that allow humanitarian assistance to be delivered without discrimination.

In addition to reaffirming the implementation of the 5PC, ASEAN welcomed the progress in the delivery of humanitarian assistance by the AHA Centre as part of the implementation of the Fourth Point of the 5PC.

In the communiqué, ASEAN also noted the completion of the three stages of the general election in Myanmar, along with subsequent developments.

The ASEAN foreign ministers also discussed elements for assessing progress in the implementation of the 5PC as a basis for determining the next steps of ASEAN’s engagement with Myanmar.

Beyond Myanmar, ASEAN welcomed the commitment of Cambodia and Thailand to maintain and strengthen the ceasefire along the two countries’ shared border.

Meanwhile, regarding developments on the Korean Peninsula, ASEAN expressed concern over rising tensions, including the surge in intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) tests and ballistic missile launches by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK).

“We express serious concern over the increase in intercontinental ballistic missile tests and ballistic missile launches by the DPRK, as well as rising tensions on the Korean Peninsula,” the ASEAN foreign ministers said.

ASEAN further called on the DPRK to comply with all relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions, and encouraged the resumption of peaceful dialogue among all parties concerned.
