Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Philippines, as the holder of the ASEAN Chairmanship in 2026, has announced the holding of the ASEAN Climate Week as a platform to transform climate ambitions and commitments into concrete actions that benefit the people of Southeast Asia.

Philippines Minister of Environment and Natural Resources Juan Miguel Cuna stated that as the host, this event, taking place from 27 April to 1 May 2026, is important to ensure that climate plans and sustainable development have a positive impact on communities, especially amid the increasingly intense impacts of climate change in the Southeast Asian region.

“The ASEAN Climate Week is about ensuring that climate plans are translated into real protection and improvements in quality of life for the people,” said Minister Cuna, according to a press release from ASEAN 2026 monitored in Jakarta on Monday.

He said that the ASEAN Climate Week takes place at a time when the people of Southeast Asia have already felt the impacts of climate change, particularly in densely populated coastal areas and vulnerable and underdeveloped regions.

To that end, said the minister, the Philippines will highlight several concrete actions such as coastal ecosystem restoration, forest rehabilitation, pollution control, and community-based natural resource management that are economically beneficial and environmentally friendly.

This ASEAN climate agenda will promote efforts to ensure that climate commitments, such as Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and the Long-Term Low Emission Development Strategy (LT-LEDS), can be better implemented at the community level.

In addition, the ASEAN Climate Week serves as a momentum to mature ASEAN’s collective voice at the 31st UN Climate Change Conference (COP31) at the end of this year and to encourage actionable outcomes for sustainable development in Southeast Asia.

Furthermore, the ASEAN agenda will include a number of high-level meetings discussing, among other things, the implementation of NDCs, knowledge exchange on mitigating climate change impacts, as well as special sessions on climate financing and solutions.

This ASEAN Climate Week is expected to produce action recommendations and a technical compendium related to best practices for addressing climate change impacts and mitigating climate risks.

As the current ASEAN Chair, the Philippines remains committed to promoting climate strategies that bring real improvements to people’s lives and ensure protection for vulnerable communities in Southeast Asia.

“We are ready to realise ASEAN’s commitments into concrete protection and opportunities for the people,” said Minister Cuna.
