ASEAN CCI to elect secretary-general

JAKARTA (JP): The Association of Southeast Asian Nations Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ASEAN CCI) will elect its first full-time secretary-general for a four-year term at its 50th council meeting here next week.

The permanent secretariat of the ASEAN CCI will be located at the ASEAN secretariat on Jl. Sisingamangaraja, South Jakarta.

Chairman of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) Aburizal Bakrie said that an executive committee will be set up to support the ASEAN CCI's activities.

President Soeharto is scheduled to open the council meeting which will be followed by the 12th conference of the ASEAN CCI at the Jakarta Convention Center.

ASEAN includes Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, The Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

Some 350 business executives and government officials, including ambassadors of ASEAN's seven members and its dialog partner countries, will attend the opening ceremony of the council meeting.

Aburizal, who will represent Indonesia at the conference, will receive the ASEAN CCI chairmanship from Brunei's chamber for the period of 1996-1997.

The council meeting will discuss the restructuring of the organization and its program for the coming two years, while the conference will ratify the change of the ASEAN CCI's statute.

Under the planned restructure, the prospective executive committee and ASEAN CCI secretary-general will be counterparts of senior ASEAN government officials, while the council members will be counterparts of the ASEAN Economic Ministers -- to be chaired by Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Production and Distribution Hartarto.
