PHILIPPINES: Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) army
chiefs are scheduled to hold a meeting in the Philippines this
week to discuss ways to increase cooperation in combating
terrorism, an official said on Monday.
Philippine army chief Lt. Gen. Jaime De Los Santos said the
Nov. 15 meeting, "intends to draw out a plan in responding to the
threats of terrorism in the region.
"This may possibly lead to sending of bilateral or
multilateral forces, or borrowing each other's assets or military
equipment (in operations)," he told reporters. "At the moment,
cooperation is limited to sharing of intelligence."
During a leaders' summit in Brunei earlier in the month, ASEAN
issued a joint declaration vowing to enhance cooperation in
efforts to combat terrorism in the region. --DPA
