ASDP Strengthens Riau Islands Maritime Gateway via Tanjung Uban Port Development
State-owned ferry operator PT ASDP Indonesia Ferry (Persero) is strengthening the maritime gateway of the Riau Islands (Kepri) through the development of Tanjung Uban Port, aiming to improve inter-island connectivity, ferry service capacity, and spur regional economic growth. ASDP President Director Heru Widodo stated in Jakarta on Sunday that the company’s commitment to strengthening inter-island connectivity is being realised through infrastructure development at Tanjung Uban Port in Bintan Regency, Riau Islands. Through the groundbreaking of Berth 2 and capacity enhancement of Berth 1, ASDP is reinforcing its role as a driver of connectivity and a catalyst for economic growth in the archipelago region. Heru said the Tanjung Uban Port development is a strategic step to address the continuously increasing mobility of people and distribution of logistics in the island region. He emphasised that every berth built by the state-owned ferry company is not merely physical infrastructure, but a link to various economic opportunities, tourism sector development, and increased regional competitiveness. ‘This initiative is part of ASDP’s commitment to realising the vision of We Bridge the Nation, connecting regions while opening access to more inclusive growth,’ Heru said. In this project, ASDP is constructing Berth 2 with a length of 119.48 metres, designed to serve vessels up to 1,000 Gross Tonnage (GRT). The berth will be equipped with an 80-tonne capacity movable bridge to facilitate the loading and unloading of vehicles and passengers. Heru assured that every stage of construction will proceed smoothly so that the benefits can be widely felt by the community and all stakeholders, while also driving economic growth and sustainable development in the Riau Islands. ASDP Batam Branch General Manager Reno Yulianto explained that in addition to the Tanjung Uban development, ASDP is also rehabilitating Berth 1 of Telaga Punggur Port to improve safety, comfort, and efficiency aspects of ferry transport services in the Riau Islands region. ‘We are targeting all these works to be completed and operating optimally by the end of 2026,’ said Reno. Through increased berth capacity and modernisation of supporting facilities, ASDP is committed to delivering more excellent ferry services to support community mobility, supply chain fluidity, and regional economic activity. Currently, Tanjung Uban Port serves three ferry routes, with the Tanjung Uban–Telaga Punggur route being one of the busiest. On this route, ASDP operates KMP Tanjung Burang and KMP Baru to serve passenger and vehicle movement between regions. Throughout January to May 2026, Tanjung Uban Port served 301,221 passengers and 131,684 vehicles. This high traffic volume forms a strong basis for the port’s capacity development to ensure services become smoother, safer, more comfortable, and efficient.
