ASDP Prioritises Passenger Safety as Top Concern in Ferry Services

Luwuk, Central Sulawesi (ANTARA) - PT ASDP Indonesia Ferry (Persero) has assured that shipping safety and comfort are its top priorities, so that passengers can reach their destinations safely.

“Safety and comfort have been a priority from the very beginning and are non-negotiable,” said ASDP Chief Executive Heru Widodo to the media during a press tour in Luwuk, Central Sulawesi, on Wednesday.

The statement was made in response to media questions regarding the continued occurrence of minor incidents aboard several of the company’s ferries.

He said safety and comfort are not only intended for passengers, but also for the transport of essential goods and motor vehicles, which are likewise a priority that cannot be overlooked.

“When a ship departs, sails, and reaches its destination, fatal accidents must be prevented and all operational standards must be ensured to be met and implemented,” said Heru.

Regarding natural disturbances causing waves as a vessel approaches a port, he acknowledged that these are indeed unavoidable and often occur at almost all ports served by ferries.

Nevertheless, before departure, the crew studies the weather forecasts issued by the BMKG, which is equipped with sophisticated instruments, allowing unwanted incidents to be anticipated.

“We carry out coordination with the relevant parties at all times, so weather conditions can be anticipated and fatal accidents do not occur,” he said.

Heru added that another point of concern is the continued presence of passengers smoking on board, which has led to fires breaking out on several ferries.

To prevent fires caused by cigarettes, the company has been ceaselessly conducting education and awareness campaigns on not smoking and the dangers of smoking for collective safety.
