ASDP Implements Sterilisation at Merak and Bakauheni Ports
JAKARTA — PT ASDP Indonesia Ferry (Persero) is advancing the modernisation of national ferry services by implementing a sterilisation policy at Merak and Bakauheni ports. The programme will be trialled in phases from 1 June 2026 before full implementation on 15 June 2026. The initiative is part of ASDP’s efforts to enhance port management standards for safer, more orderly, and efficient operations, while facilitating smooth passenger, vehicle, and inter-island logistics flows. With more controlled area management, ASDP aims to ensure smoother, more comfortable port operations in line with sustainable transport governance principles. The policy is based on several national regulations governing shipping, transport, and port area management, including zoning and port sterilisation provisions. These regulations underpin ASDP’s development of a more integrated, secure, and adaptable service system to meet public mobility needs and national logistics developments. ASDP President Director Heru Widodo stressed that port sterilisation is not merely operational area management but part of the company’s service transformation focused on passenger safety, security, and comfort. ‘Implementing this policy reflects our commitment to delivering more orderly, secure, and modern port governance,’ Heru stated in a written release on Sunday, 31 May 2026. ‘Through this programme, port activities will become more organised, access more controlled, and all operating parties can carry out their duties with optimal safety and security,’ Heru added. He said port sterilisation is implemented through strategic steps, including strengthening surveillance and control systems across operational areas, regulating activities according to function and authority, and mandating the use of identification and personal protective equipment (PPE). Sterilisation also involves vehicle and personnel access control via sticker systems and digital platforms, alongside enhanced coordination with all stakeholders to ensure sustainable port operations. At Merak Port, sterilisation implementation is bolstered by the One Gate System, which entered a trial phase on 25 May 2026. Under this scheme, all Express and Regular service vehicles are directed to enter the port via a single main access point at the Executive Gate. Meanwhile, Bakauheni Port is adopting a technology-driven approach with Face Recognition, RFID, CCTV, vehicle monitoring, and integrated digital surveillance systems to strengthen port security and operational control. ASDP Corporate Secretary Windy Andale explained that as part of the port sterilisation implementation, the company is also introducing electric shuttle buses and two-wheeled electric vehicles to support operational mobility within the port area. ‘Under this scheme, all registered users must park fuel-powered vehicles in designated areas and continue operational activities using electric vehicles within the port,’ Windy said. Through strengthened operational governance, modern technology use, and sustainability principles, ASDP is optimistic of delivering superior, secure, and adaptable port services to support future national connectivity. ‘This move not only creates a more orderly and controlled area but also reflects ASDP’s commitment to implementing Green Port initiatives through eco-friendly transport,’ Windy added.
