ASDP Confirms Electric Vehicles Allowed on Ferries, Here Are the Conditions
PT ASDP Indonesia Ferry has confirmed that electric vehicles (EVs) can continue to use inter-island ferry services provided they meet applicable safety regulations. Corporate Secretary Windy Andale stated that EV ferry operations now follow Directorate General of Sea Transportation Circular No. SE-DJPL 12 of 2024 regarding the handling of ships carrying electric vehicles. ‘Electric vehicles can safely and comfortably travel by ferry as long as they comply with existing maritime safety regulations,’ Windy told Kompas.com on Monday, 1 June 2026. As EV usage rises in Indonesia, ASDP said it is coordinating with the Ministry of Transportation, regulators, ship operators, and other stakeholders to ensure optimal implementation of the rules. ASDP also outlined requirements regarding the battery condition of EVs before boarding. This follows the Directorate General of Sea Transportation guidelines, which state that EV users must ensure battery charge levels are between 30-50% when boarding. Additionally, EVs are placed in designated stowage areas, typically on open or upper decks for better ventilation and easier monitoring by crew. ‘These areas are also marked with special signage to support safety and ease of monitoring during the voyage,’ Windy said. ASDP stated it has bolstered operational readiness to address EV-related risks, including potential battery fires. Regarding reports of EV users being denied ferry boarding, ASDP affirmed there is no policy banning EVs from using ferry services. The state-owned company said it has conducted awareness campaigns and training for port officials and crew to ensure consistent service standards for EVs. Should discrepancies in treatment or understanding persist, ASDP will evaluate and provide guidance to relevant staff and operators. She added that safety standards will continue to be reviewed and enhanced in line with EV technology developments and international safety practices.
