ASDP CEO: Tanjung Kalian wharf development strengthens connectivity
Tanjung Kalian Port has long served as the lifeline for community movement and logistics connecting the Bangka Belitung Islands with Sumatra Island. President Director of PT ASDP Indonesia Ferry (Persero) Heru Widodo stated that the construction of Wharf II and the capacity upgrade of Wharf I at Tanjung Kalian Port, West Bangka Regency, Bangka Belitung, aims to strengthen connectivity, improve ferry services, and drive regional economic growth.
In response to increasing mobility and demand for ferry services, ASDP has taken a strategic step through the groundbreaking of Wharf II construction and the capacity enhancement of Wharf I at Tanjung Kalian Port. Heru said the wharf development and capacity increase represent the company’s commitment to delivering increasingly reliable, safe, and sustainable ferry transport services. “Port infrastructure plays a vital role as a driver of connectivity and regional economic growth,” he remarked.
He added that the development and capacity increase of Tanjung Kalian Wharf are part of the state-owned enterprise’s commitment to providing more reliable ferry transport services, while also anticipating peak transport demand during Christmas, New Year, and Lebaran periods. The development project includes the construction of Wharf II, designed to serve vessels with a maximum capacity of 1,000 gross tonnage (GT), with dimensions of 58 metres in length and 13 metres in width. Additionally, the capacity of Wharf I is being upgraded to accommodate vessels up to 2,000 GT, with dimensions of 70 metres in length and 15 metres in width. “This development is expected to enhance vessel operational flexibility while optimising ferry service capacity,” Heru stated.
ASDP Bangka Branch General Manager Agustinus Cahyo explained that Tanjung Kalian Port plays a crucial role as a connectivity gateway for the public via the Tanjung Kalian-Tanjung Api-Api route, served by KMP Madani, KMP Mutis, and KMP Belanak. From January to May 2026, this route served 76,875 passengers and 58,952 vehicles. “This high level of ferry activity is an important indicator for us to continue strengthening infrastructure and increasing service capacity,” he said.
The capacity enhancement of Tanjung Kalian Port is expected not only to improve service quality for users but also to open new economic growth opportunities and facilitate smoother inter-regional connectivity in Bangka Belitung and Sumatra. Bangka Belitung Governor Hidayat Arsani affirmed that the development of Tanjung Kalian Port is a strategic move given its role as the main connectivity hub linking the people of Bangka Belitung with Sumatra Island. “We hope this project proceeds without obstacles and becomes a driver of economic growth and regional development, particularly in Mentok and West Bangka,” Hidayat said.
