As of Yesterday, Minimum Age for Instagram, Facebook, and Threads is 16 Years
Meta has raised the minimum age limit for accounts on Instagram, Facebook, and Threads to 16 years. This policy has been implemented for Indonesian users starting Thursday (9/4/2026) yesterday.
This step is taken as an effort to comply with the PP Tunas social media usage restriction regulation that came into effect at the end of last March. Minister of Communication and Digital Meutya Hafid confirmed that her side has officially seen this change.
“As of today, we have seen that Meta has officially changed the community guidelines by setting the minimum age limit to 16 years on all its platforms, namely Instagram, Facebook, and Threads,” said Meutya during a press conference yesterday.
Meta also conveyed this change through a letter submitted to the Komdigi side.
She explained that Meta requested time to change the Community Guidelines until Friday today (10/4/2026). This is because time is needed to change it for users numbering more than 100 million.
“So if friends open it on different mobile phones, the display is still different, but earlier we checked that most of it has indeed changed to 16, and tomorrow it is planned that all of it will change to 16 years,” she said.
“And this is already in two languages, so in English it is already there, and earlier we were reported that in Indonesian it has also come out,” she added.
The next stage after changing the Community Guidelines is to deactivate accounts that do not meet the age requirement. This will be done gradually.
“The next stage is certainly to deactivate accounts under 16 years old. This is the statement of commitment that we have received, in its supervision of course we need time because they just changed today and tomorrow. But as a statement of commitment, this has been conveyed by Meta that they will also carry it out, starting to deactivate gradually,” explained Meutya.
