As Night Falls, Student Protesters March Towards the DPR Building

Students began arriving to stage a demonstration in front of the DPR/MPR building in Jakarta on Thursday evening, 27 August 2026.

Based on observations, groups of students from various universities began moving towards the gates of the DPR building.

They had been arriving since the afternoon, carrying flags, banners and posters bearing their demands.

Meanwhile, police officers remained on guard along Jalan Gatot Subroto. They formed a blockade with riot shields already on standby.

Not only university students, but school pupils also took to the streets. However, they were dispersed by police while heading towards the DPR/MPR building.

As of now, the crowd is still staging a protest in front of the DPR RI building while voicing their demands.

To secure the demonstration, more than ten thousand personnel were placed on standby. Security was arranged in layers to ensure that the public’s expression of aspirations proceeded safely and in an orderly manner.

Central Jakarta Police Chief, Senior Commissioner Reynold Hutagalung, confirmed that security measures prioritised a humane approach. He also said that the police continued to provide space for the public to express their aspirations in accordance with applicable regulations.

“We are here to provide a sense of safety and comfort to all members of the public who are expressing their aspirations,” he said.

He revealed that officers assigned to secure the demonstration would not be equipped with firearms or sharp weapons.
