Newly appointed Environment Minister Mohammad Jumhur Hidayat has stated that he will continue to personally lead a convoy of tens of thousands of workers on motorcycles during the May Day commemoration on 1 May 2026 in Jakarta. “I plan to do it myself, as it’s a public holiday; even if I’m appointed, on the holiday I’ll ride a motorcycle to lead the group from Jakarta, around 40,000 on motorcycles,” Jumhur said at the Presidential Palace complex in Jakarta on Monday. The labour activist, freshly appointed as minister, expressed his commitment to taking to the streets on 1 May. Jumhur explained that the peaceful action will centre on the Monas area. This year’s Labour Day momentum will also serve as a platform to celebrate several government policies that favour workers. According to Jumhur, workers’ aspirations are now being substantively accommodated by the state. One strategic step being prepared by the government is the establishment of a Task Force for Layoff Mitigation through a Presidential Decree. In addition to welfare issues, Jumhur continues to advocate for tightening regulations on outsourced labour or outsourcing. He hopes that improvements in labour regulations can realise justice for all workers in Indonesia. On the other hand, as Environment Minister, Jumhur stated that his side has mapped out several priority strategies to address. The issue of waste management in various regions of Indonesia is one of the main focuses that must be resolved immediately. “The Environment Minister has many tasks and we must work hard to complete them. The most pressing issue is waste, and we must also keep up with international issues or agreements gradually,” he said. Jumhur also mentioned that he has received support from labour unions to join the Prabowo-Gibran government cabinet.
