Aru protesters disrupt vote count
AMBON, Maluku: The vote count from the June 23 election in Aru
Island regency was disrupted on Thursday when hundreds of
protesters gathered outside the Aru Island General Elections
Commission office.
The protesters, upset over election process, prevented
commission members from entering the office.
Protesters accused the commission of backing certain
candidates in the elections. Police had to be called in to
prevent the protesters from entering the commission office.
Aru Island Police chief Comr. G. Oraplean said the protesters
were supporters of candidates S. Mantaibordir and running mate
Ambo Wallay, and Abdy Dabamona and Yusup Ndumgair.
"They are unhappy with the elections process," Oraplean said,
adding that the situation was under control.
Aru Island Regent Jopie Patty confirmed the protest and said
he would gather together tribal leaders from nearby villages to
discuss the matter. -- JP
