Arts festival to open on June 7

YOGYAKARTA: The annual Yogyakarta Arts Festival (FKY) is to open this year on June 7 with Art for Environment as the main theme.

"The theme is deliberately selected to rebuild the cultural civilization and awareness among Yogyakartans," Chairman of FKY 2005's organizing committee B. Siswanto said here earlier this week.

With the theme, according to Siswanto, all the festival's activities would be rooted in the resurgence of local wisdom in dealing with global life.

Activities to be held during the month-long festival include fine arts exhibitions, music performances, theater performances, dance performances, traditional dramas of wayang orang and kethoprak, shadow puppet performances, traditional gamelan concerts, and an arts market. -- JP
