Artist, community holds joint exhibition

YOGYAKARTA: Cemeti Art House on Jl. DI Panjaitan is to
hold an exhibition and an art performance that is a
result of research on people's participation in artwork.

Entitled Lintang Desa, the exhibition is the joint work of
artist Moelyono, Yayasan Seni Rupa Komunitas and the people of
Kebonsari, Pacitan, East Java.

The exhibition will present a lesungan performance, usually
put on during a traditional party held in a traditional
community.

What is unique about the performance is that it is prepared
via a dialog between the artist and the participating
community. The discussion includes the plot of the story, the
scenery, stage decoration and setting.

According to Cemeti, such research on participatory
action is aimed at encouraging people to rediscover their local
capacity and to reflect on it, in this case, it is on how the
people can together join forces in the dynamics of life as
manifest through an art work. --JP
