Artika Sari Devi stresses importance of character education for children

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Puteri Indonesia 2004 Artika Sari Devi believes that character formation is a primary aspect that needs attention in children’s education alongside academic achievement, so collaboration between parents and schools is needed to support children’s development in a holistic manner.

“Children not only learn to respect themselves, but also to respect others. Empathy is a value we look for,” said Artika at the launch of the new identity of Veritas Intercultural School (VIS), held in conjunction with National Children’s Day commemorations in Jakarta on Thursday.

The star of the film “Dia Bukan Ibu” said that the school’s involvement in supporting each child’s development means parents are not simply dropping their children off, but becoming part of the educational process.

According to her, schools also need to provide space for children to develop their potential according to their interests.

“Children possess diverse intelligences. Not only academic, but also the arts, sport, languages, and other fields. That is what we value about the school,” she said.

On the other hand, Artika acknowledged that raising Generation Alpha has become increasingly challenging because children are growing up alongside digital technology. According to her, parents need to be good listeners whilst also setting clear boundaries on the use of technology.

Meanwhile, Head of Veritas Intercultural School Lauren Sarinah said that the school’s task is not only to provide academic learning, but also to prepare children for life through the strengthening of character, critical thinking, communication, and collaboration.

“Our hope is that we can work together with parents to ensure the success of our children, not only in academics, but also in their lives,” said Lauren.

She explained that VIS, which has been established for 25 years, has now adopted the International Baccalaureate (IB) framework to develop academic abilities whilst shaping learners capable of solving real-life problems.

According to Lauren, cooperation between the school and parents is key to shaping a generation that is not only academically excellent, but also possesses strong character, empathy, and the ability to adapt to future challenges.
