The development of digital technology over the last two decades has brought fundamental changes to nearly all aspects of human life, including the world of education. One of the most significant innovations is the emergence and development of Artificial Intelligence (AI), which has now permeated learning systems, ways of thinking, and the intellectual dynamics of students. AI is no longer merely a futuristic concept but has become an integral part of students’ daily lives, from using chatbots to assist with academic tasks and adaptive learning systems to algorithm-based educational data analysis. In the context of education, AI enables a learning process that is more personal, efficient, and data-driven. However, this phenomenon does not only bring benefits. AI also raises new problems, such as dependence on technology, a decline in critical thinking skills, and issues of academic ethics. It is within this context that the term ‘intellectual whirlpool’ for students emerges, describing a condition where students are caught in a rapid, complex, and often contradictory current between technological advancement and the demand for authentic intellectualism. In the history of educational development, every technological advance has been accompanied by similar anxieties. When the printing press was invented, there was a fear that humans would lose their memorisation skills. When the calculator was introduced, concerns arose that arithmetic abilities would decline. When the internet arrived, there was anxiety that humans would lose the capacity for deep reading. However, in each of these phases, what occurred was not a permanent intellectual decline but a shift in the form of intellectuality. The same holds true for AI. The development of Artificial Intelligence in the contemporary global landscape presents not only technological changes but also a fundamental epistemological transformation in how humans understand, process, and produce knowledge. For students, AI is not merely a tool but a structural force that is thoroughly reshaping intellectual dynamics. Today’s students live in a cognitive ecosystem that is radically different from that of previous generations—an ecosystem characterised by information speed, data complexity, and increasingly intense human-technology interaction. In this condition, the term ‘intellectual whirlpool’ for students becomes relevant to describe a situation where they are caught in simultaneous and layered currents of transformation. This whirlpool does not only depict pressure or confusion but also a productive dynamic that encourages the birth of new forms of intellectuality. AI is at the centre of this whirlpool, not as a threat, but as a catalyst for cognitive evolution.
