Arne Slot's Open Letter to Merseyside: You'll Never Walk Alone
Arne Slot officially ends his tenure at Anfield, leaving a heartfelt message for all loyal Liverpool FC supporters. Through an exclusive open letter published in Liverpool ECHO, the Dutch coach reflects on his two eventful years, from the peak of winning the 20th league title to challenging times that tested the club’s solidarity.
Slot, who was relieved of his duties last weekend after Liverpool finished fifth in the final standings, is still regarded as a key architect in the club’s modern history.
Despite a disappointing second season, his greatest legacy is bringing the Premier League trophy back to Anfield in his first season with a 10-point margin over closest rivals.
In his letter, Slot recalls the emotional moment on 25 May last year when fans celebrated the first league title won at Anfield in 35 years.
The city parade attended by around one million people is proof of the strong bond between his team and the Liverpool community.
‘Walking under the famous sign in the Anfield tunnel, you feel a mix of emotions, responsibility, expectations, and determination. That all these emotions culminated in a Premier League title after just 12 months is incredible,’ Slot wrote.
One of the most poignant parts of the letter is when Slot discusses the tragedy involving their star striker, Diogo Jota. The Portuguese player tragically died in a car accident in Spain last July with his brother, Andre Silva.
Slot praised the dignity and class shown by the Liverpool family in dealing with the grief. ‘The way you honoured Diogo and stood together in his memory will stay with me forever. The connection we have goes beyond football,’ he said.
Despite leaving with bitterness due to his sacking, Slot stated he is leaving the club in a stable state. Securing a Champions League spot on the final day of the season was seen as a crucial responsibility to ensure Liverpool remains among Europe’s elite.
He also expressed appreciation to the owners (FSG), coaching staff, and club legends for helping him understand ‘The Liverpool Way’. Slot believes the foundation he built with senior players and emerging young talents will keep Liverpool competing at the highest level.
‘Change is part of football, but I know this club will continue to make people proud. I leave knowing we never stop fighting for it,’ Slot concluded in his letter signed with his initials, ‘Arne’.
