Armed Thief Caught by Residents in East Jakarta After Being Spotted Stealing a Motorcycle

A man with the initials RZ (35) was arrested in the Jati sub-district, Pulogadung district, East Jakarta. He was caught by residents after being spotted stealing a motorcycle.

Pulogadung Police Chief AKBP Suroto said the incident occurred on Tuesday (24/2) night. During the act, the perpetrator carried a homemade firearm.

“The Pulogadung Police Criminal Investigation Unit successfully uncovered a case of motorcycle theft accompanied by the possession of a homemade firearm,” said Suroto, Thursday (26/2/2026).

The perpetrator was known to have taken the victim’s motorcycle from his rented room. Residents who suspected the perpetrator’s movements immediately shouted at him.

“The shouts of ‘thief’ immediately triggered a chase. Residents along the escape route quickly blocked him until the perpetrator fell from the stolen motorcycle,” he explained.

It was during the arrest that the firearm was found lying near the perpetrator. The weapon was then secured by residents along with five bullets and a T-shaped key.

“Police who arrived at the location immediately took the perpetrator and evidence to the Police Station for further examination,” he added.

From the initial examination, it was found that the perpetrator acted with a partner with the initials M. The police are currently pursuing the other perpetrator.

“The police ensured that further investigation is being carried out to uncover the perpetrator’s network and possible involvement in similar cases in the East Jakarta area,” he said.
