Armed Criminal Group Shoots Mother Dead in Mimika, Throws Her Child into Ravine

An armed criminal group (KKB) took nine women hostage in Mimika Regency, Central Papua. Tragically, a mother was reported shot dead and her child thrown into a ravine after they refused to be taken captive by the perpetrators.

“The identity of the deceased victim shot by Neregingget Magai is (48) and the child thrown into the ravine is Inkolung Aim, with a broken leg injury,” said Mimika Police Chief AKBP Alredo Agustinus Rumbiak, as quoted by detikSulsel on Wednesday (19/8/2026).

The incident occurred in Pasir Putih Village, Jila District, Mimika, on Tuesday (18/8). The hostage-taking of residents took place a day after the KKB attacked Indonesian Army personnel at the Pam Obvit Task Force Post of Infantry Battalion 133/YS in Jila District.

“This is likely still the same KKB group that carried out the shooting at the 133/YS Task Force Post in Jila. After the shooting, the hostage-taking occurred,” he stressed.

Alredo said a mother and her child became targets of violence because they refused to be taken hostage. Meanwhile, nine other residents were forcibly taken by the KKB into the forest.

“Two people refused to be taken by the KKB. According to information, the mother was shot dead, while her child was thrown into a ravine. Meanwhile, nine other women were taken into the forest,” he said.

Of the nine residents taken hostage, one was named Nemerina Wamang (17), who was reported to be in early pregnancy. The other eight were Alin Mesawarol (sixth grade of elementary school), Nopi Aim (fourth grade of elementary school), Opinte Mesawaro (third grade of elementary school), Yotina Senawatme (18), Meria Nibilingame (15), Wena Katagame (18), Ilimin Onawame (18), and Miante Nibilingame (13).
