Armed Clash in Central Papua, TNI Reports 4 OPM Members Killed
Four members of the Free Papua Organisation (OPM) are reported to have died following an armed clash with TNI personnel in Central Papua on Friday (25/9).
The incident reportedly began when the TNI Habema Operations Command Task Force, through personnel from the 315/Garuda Infantry Battalion and the Taipur Team, was conducting regional security operations in Kampung Balamai Atas, Hitadipa District, Central Papua.
Commander of TNI Habema, Brigadier General Riyanto, stated that the activity was carried out after receiving information regarding the presence of the OPM Kodap VIII/Intan Jaya armed group, led by Daniel Aibon Kogoya, in the vicinity.
“Personnel then conducted careful checks and monitoring to ensure the situation and prevent threats to the community,” Riyanto said in a written statement on Friday.
During the security process, armed contact occurred between the TNI Habema Task Force personnel and the armed group.
He stated that based on preliminary reports from the field, four members of the group were reported dead.
“Two were found near the scene, while two others reportedly fell into a ravine during the clash,” he said.
From the scene, personnel also secured several items. Initial identification includes one SS2 V1 rifle, one long-barrel firearm with a Trijicon sight, 50 rounds of 5.56 mm ammunition, one SS2 V1 magazine, communication equipment, mobile phones, and various other field supplies.
He noted that all findings would be secured for further investigation in accordance with applicable regulations.
Riyanto emphasised that every action taken by soldiers in the field must be selective, measured, professional, and in accordance with legal provisions, with public safety as the priority.
“Firmness against threats and the protection of the community must go hand in hand. Every action by soldiers must be measured, selective, professional, and continue to respect humanitarian values. The ultimate goal is not merely to overcome security disturbances, but to create a safe space so that the community can live their lives in peace,” he said.
He urged members of the armed group still in the forests and mountains to abandon violence and return to their families and communities.
“To our brothers who are still outside the villages, the path to return is always open. Return to your families, your community, and your homeland,” he said.
“Let us build Papua together. Bravery is not only when someone is able to take up arms, but also when one is brave enough to lay them down and choose a better life,” Riyanto added.
