Aris Sanda Found Dead Alongside Charred Vehicle; TNI Tightens Security on Trans Wamena Route
The discovery of the body of transport driver Aris Sanda alongside his burnt vehicle on the Trans Wamena route has prompted the TNI to strengthen security in the area.
Aris was previously reported to be a victim of shooting by an armed group on the Trans Wamena route on Tuesday, 15 September 2026. His body was found after soldiers from Koops TNI Habema conducted search and sweep operations around the incident site.
In addition to the body, authorities found the vehicle used by Aris in a burnt condition. The evacuation process of the deceased is currently being carried out, with careful consideration given to the safety of personnel and the situation on the ground.
The Head of Information for Koops TNI Habema, Lt Col Infantry M. Wirya Arthadiguna, stated that the evacuation process is being conducted in accordance with applicable procedures.
”The evacuation process of the body is being carried out according to the applicable procedures,” he said, as quoted on Thursday, 17 September 2026.
Following the discovery, Koops TNI Habema, along with relevant security apparatus, is also conducting a deep investigation to uncover the chronology of the incident and to identify the parties suspected of involvement.
”Koops TNI Habema will continue its efforts to handle the armed group involved, including conducting patrols and supporting the law enforcement process in accordance with applicable regulations,” he said.
TNI Headquarters has expressed concern regarding the security of the Trans Wamena route, which serves as a vital access point for the community. The reinforcement of security is being implemented to prevent civilians from falling victim to violence again.
The Head of the TNI Public Relations Centre (Kapuspen TNI), Major General Mohammad Nas, stated that the TNI will continue to coordinate with local governments and relevant security agencies.
”The TNI will continue to protect the community and ensure that armed groups are not free to commit violence against civilians. Every act of violence will be met firmly, professionally, measuredly, and in accordance with the applicable law,” said Nas.
The Commander of Koops TNI Habema, Brigadier General Riyanto, as conveyed by Wirya, also expressed condolences to Aris’s family. He emphasised that the victim was a civilian working to help meet the needs of the community in the hinterland.
”The victim was a civilian who was working to serve the needs of the community. Violence against civilians cannot be justified. The perpetrators must be held accountable for their actions according to the applicable law,” said Wirya.
