Architecture in Jakarta
From Kompas
The physical development in Jakarta -- Jl. Jenderal Sudirman,
Jl. Gatot Subroto and Casablanca areas -- is amazing. High-rise
buildings with various architectural designs and functions are
found in these areas. Unfortunately, all the buildings look
similar to ones we find in other countries like Tokyo, Hong Kong
or New York. And none of the buildings -- hotels, apartments, and
shopping centers etc. -- reflects Indonesia's traditional
architecture. Each building has its own exclusive architectural
design, which does not contribute to harmony.
However, it is not too late to do something about it. Our
Indonesian architects should tried to adopt traditional
architectural designs and so preserve an Indonesian-styled
environment.
I know this is not going to be easy, but the decision makers
should be more sensitive to an environment which reflects more of
the Indonesian culture.
