Archery body fails to elect new chairman

JAKARTA: The Indonesian Archery Association failed to elect a new chairman during its congress which ended here on Friday.

The director of the Sports Academy, IGK Manila, Minister of Industry and Trade Rini Soewandi and politician Arifin Panigoro had been mentioned as possible successors to outgoing chairman Hayono Isman.

Rini and Arifin, who comes from the ruling Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI Perjuangan), withdrew their names from consideration because they failed to obtain the endorsement of President Megawati Soekarnoputri, national archery coach Tony Rudijanto said.

Manila's candidacy was rejected by the floor.

The congress coincided with the national archery championship, with Central Java coming out as overall champion with nine gold medals.

The championship also served as a selection for the next Southeast Asian Games. --JP
