Archer to light Games torch
JAKARTA (JP): Top Indonesian female archer Nurfitriyana Sam Lantang, has been named to kindle the 14th National Games torch with a flaming arrow during the Games's opening ceremony on Sept. 9, secretary-general of the organizing committee, Eddy Widodo, said on Thursday.
Eddy added that the opening ceremony at the Senayan stadium would involve around 14,000 performers. Nurfitriyana, together with Lilies Handayani and Kusumawardhani, won a silver medal in the women's team at the archery competition of the Seoul Olympic Games in 1988.
At the 13th National Games in 1993, it was Verawati Fadjrin, the 1980 world badminton women's singles champion, who was given the honor of lighting the Games cauldron with a flaming shuttlecock. (arf)
