Arafah Day Fast 2026: Does it Have to Coincide with the Wukuf on Arafah?
Eid al-Adha is celebrated on the 10th of Dhul-Hijjah each year in the Islamic calendar. The day before, on the 9th of Dhul-Hijjah, is known as the Day of Arafah.
On that day, Muslims who do not perform the standing at Arafah, but instead observe a Sunnah fast known as the Day of Arafah. Eid al-Adha 1447 AH / 2026 falls on Wednesday, 27 May 2026. Accordingly, the Arafah fast can be observed on Tuesday, 26 May 2026.
Considering this, is the Arafah fast always required to coincide with the Wukuf time performed at the plain of Arafah? Read in the article below!
How is the Arafah Fast Derived from the Evidence?
The Day of Arafah fasting on the 9th of Dhul-Hijjah is a Sunnah whose virtue includes the forgiveness of sins for the past year. This Sunnah has been observed since the time of the Prophet Muhammad.
From Maimunah, the wife of the Prophet (peace be upon him), she said: “People used to doubt whether the Messenger of Allah fasted on the Day of Arafah.” Maimunah sent him a cup of milk while he was standing at the plains of the stand, and he drank from it while people watched.” [Hadith: Sahih Bukhari and Muslim]
From Umm al-Fadl bint al-Harith (may Allah be pleased with her) that some people argued near her on the Day of Arafah about the Prophet’s fasting, some saying he fasted and some saying he did not fast. She sent a cup of milk to him, and while he was standing on his camel, he drank it. [Hadith: Sahih Bukhari and Muslim]
The two Hadiths above teach us the wisdom about the Day of Arafah fasting. This Sunnah has been practiced long before the Prophet Muhammad performed the Hajj. Also, the Prophet performed Hajj only once, namely the Farewell Pilgrimage. Secondly, those who stand for Wukuf do not need to, or some say it is not recommended to, fast. This is seen from the Hadith showing the Prophet standing at the Wukuf and drinking the milk given by his wife.
Must It Be Coincident with Wukuf on Arafah?
Determination of dates in the Hijri calendar relies on the rukyatul hilal (moon sighting) or hisab (astronomical calculation), including for Eid al-Adha. The sighting of the crescent or the new moon that appears just before sunset can permit differences in how Eid is observed.
Differences in determining Eid al-Adha occurred in 2022. At that time, Saudi Arabia fixed Eid al-Adha on 9 July 2022, while Indonesia set it on 10 July. The existence of such differing determinations also affects the Day of Arafah fasting. Do Muslims have to follow the Arafah fast according to Wukuf on 9 Dzul-Hijjah in Saudi? According to Sheikh Sulaiman Al-Jamal quoted from NU Online, the determination depends on the local area.
If one place has seen the hilal and a place far away has not yet seen it, then the new moon has taken effect and, accordingly, the obligation of worship such as fasting or Eid follows. This rule applies to Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr, and Eid al-Adha.
Muslims intending to fast the Day of Arafah should follow the Hijri calendar dates as observed in their own region.
Thus, the article outlines the Arafah Fast and its relationship to Wukuf. May it be beneficial.
