The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government, through the Road Infrastructure Agency (DBM), continues to strive to improve the safety and comfort of road users. One such effort is the construction of five zebra crossing points on Jalan Soepomo, Tebet, South Jakarta, four of which are scheduled to begin work on Monday night (30/3/2026). “We hope that the presence of these zebra crossings can support safer and more orderly mobility for residents, while also strengthening a culture of mutual respect on the road,” said the Head of the DKI Jakarta Provincial Road Infrastructure Agency, Heru Suwondo, in Jakarta on Monday (30/3/2026). He also expressed apologies for the inconvenience that the public had experienced due to the unavailability of crossing facilities in the area. This situation occurred as a result of periodic road maintenance as well as the construction and improvement of sidewalks at the end of 2025, which caused the previous zebra crossing markings to be covered by a new layer of asphalt. In addition, high rainfall also posed challenges in the construction process. It should be noted, he explained, that repainting road markings cannot be done directly after asphalt laying. “The thermoplastic marking material requires the road surface to have undergone an optimal drying period so that it can adhere properly and have maximum durability,” he emphasised. Furthermore, Heru appreciated the concern and initiative of the community who had painted the road to function as a zebra crossing. According to him, such participation reflects collective awareness of the importance of safety in public spaces. He added that at points that have been created independently by the community, the zebra crossings will be rearranged gradually in accordance with technical standards, taking into account the existing conditions on the ground.
