Appointed legislators
Appointed legislators
From Suara Karya
There has been much discussion about the legislators who hail
from the Armed Forces. As we know, 100 armed forces members are
appointed as legislators. The problem, in my opinion, is not
whether the number should be reduced or not, but their commitment
to the interests of the people. Some people say they are not very
thoughtful as to the fate of the people.
Furthermore, I am rather concerned with the trend of
liberalism in the way the people think. When we base our
democracy on the Pancasila philosophy, we should not be so
concerned with reducing the number of armed forces legislators,
but rather alleviating the people from their suffering.
Then it would be more appropriate for us to ponder the
relevancy of appointing military men as legislators without going
through the process of election. In fact we must think of an
election system which guarantees a better result, such as quality
representatives that are truly committed to the people they
represent.
