REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — President Prabowo Subianto inaugurated Mohammad Jumhur Hidayat as Minister of Environment at the State Palace in Jakarta on Monday (27/4/2026). Following the inauguration, Jumhur immediately highlighted the waste issue as a priority that must be addressed promptly.

Jumhur assessed that national waste management still faces numerous challenges, particularly in meeting global standards. “I have been appointed and inaugurated as Minister of Environment. There are certainly many things that need to be done, especially those right in front of us. For example, waste, which we will gradually improve to follow global standards,” said Jumhur.

He emphasised that the improvements will be carried out gradually, focusing on system enhancements and governance. This step is aimed at ensuring that waste management is not merely administrative but also directly impacts environmental quality and public health.

In addition, Jumhur underscored the importance of Indonesia’s involvement in various international environmental cooperation efforts. According to him, the government will strengthen its position in global agreements to support the environmental protection agenda.

“Various international agreements will be pursued. With the support of the President, who has a strong commitment to the environment, I am confident that the Ministry of Environment can carry out this mandate well,” he stated.

Jumhur also highlighted the factor of changing public behaviour as the key to the success of environmental policies. He believes that regulations will not be effective without public awareness in maintaining the environment on a daily basis.

“I want to campaign so that concern for the environment becomes a habit in our hearts. If that happens, insya Allah, the impact will be even better for society in the future,” he said.

He is optimistic that with a combination of policies, global collaboration, and changes in public behaviour, the target of better environmental management can be achieved in the medium term.
