Apple prepares smarter Genmoji for iOS 27

Apple is reportedly working on enhancements for the Genmoji feature in iOS 27, which will introduce smarter emoji suggestions. According to a Bloomberg report cited by Gadget360 on Monday, a new feature called ‘Suggested Genmoji’ will be able to automatically recommend emojis based on photos stored on a user’s device and frequently typed phrases.

The report notes that this feature will be optional and can be disabled via keyboard settings. The Genmoji feature currently allows users to create custom emojis using text commands. However, the initial implementation of Genmoji faced criticism because the generated images did not always match Apple’s promotional materials.

Apple subsequently improved Genmoji in iOS 26 by introducing additional customisation options and the ability to merge two standard emojis into a single new Genmoji. With the iOS 27 update, users are expected to no longer need to create Genmoji manually using text prompts, as the system will provide more relevant automatic recommendations. The report also suggests that Apple has not yet implemented major upgrades to the Genmoji image-generating AI model and will likely continue to rely on on-device AI processing.
