Apple Overhauls Siri AI at WWDC 2026, Marking Tim Cook's Emotional Farewell
Apple has officially announced a massive overhaul of its digital assistant by introducing Siri AI at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2026. This move aims to provide a superior artificial intelligence experience for users. In addition to AI advancements, the tech giant also announced a series of changes to trust and safety features in iOS 27 to enhance child safety when using Apple products.
The annual event also served as the final keynote stage for Tim Cook as CEO before his official resignation this coming September, following 15 years of leadership. Cook will be succeeded by John Ternus, who was present but did not speak during Monday morning’s main session.
The introduction of Siri AI addresses criticisms that Apple has lagged behind other tech giants. The new version of Siri will be integrated across various Apple products and applications, running alongside new applications similar to the AI assistants from OpenAI and Anthropic. Siri AI is designed to be more capable and communicative by leveraging past user interactions, image understanding, and extensive world knowledge.
“We believe that truly helpful AI must be centred on you and your needs,” said Craig Federighi, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Software Engineering. He added that the feature is designed with privacy as a priority “at every step.” However, the beta version of Siri AI, set for release later this year, will not be available in the European Union (EU) due to local regulatory hurdles. Meanwhile, Apple has also partnered with Google to launch Apple Foundation Models, which are based on Google’s Gemini models and cloud technology.
“Apple must address its shortcomings in AI, and WWDC provides some answers,” commented Ben Wood, head analyst at CCS Insight. “The company must now prove that this privacy-first and integration-focused approach can translate into a much better everyday experience.”
In the iOS 27 update, Apple is expanding parental control features, requiring approval before children can communicate with strangers. The system will also automatically censor sexually explicit or violent images sent to children’s devices. Nevertheless, Apple continues to face protests from child safety activists outside Apple Park. Sarah Gardner from the HEAT Initiative even chained herself to a tree, demanding Apple remove “nudification” technology from the App Store and purge child sexual abuse material (CSAM) from iCloud.
An emotional atmosphere enveloped the end of the event as thousands of employees and developers gave Tim Cook a standing ovation. “Your imagination and ingenuity have inspired me over the last 15 years, and I am deeply grateful to have been on this journey with you,” Cook said emotionally, describing his position as a “lifelong honour.”
Additionally, Apple is currently testing four smart glasses designs planned for a 2027 release. Lacking a screen, these devices will focus on cameras, audio, and Siri integration. Apple is also reported to be developing an anti-snatching feature that automatically locks an iPhone during a theft attempt, utilising the accelerometer and Apple Watch.
