Apple Negotiates Payment for News Content Used by Siri AI
Apple is reportedly negotiating with a number of media companies to use their content as a source of information for its artificial intelligence (AI)-based Siri.
Citing Engadget on Thursday (13/8) local time, Apple has approached several news publishers in recent months and offered partnerships spanning several years.
Content from these publishers will be used by Siri to present the latest news and other information within its services. Siri AI is expected to arrive alongside iOS 27 when the operating system is released to the public at the end of this year.
The scheme differs from the approach commonly used by major AI companies such as OpenAI, which typically offers publishers a fixed licensing fee in exchange for access to content on a broad scale.
Apple has previously paid a number of publishers for the rights to use their content, including for training the company’s AI models.
Apple first introduced the Siri virtual assistant with AI-based capabilities at WWDC 2024. However, its launch was delayed for two years before being reintroduced at this year’s WWDC.
In developing Siri AI, Apple is working with Google to develop the Gemini AI model, which has been adapted to support the virtual assistant.
Early-stage test results show that Siri AI has improved capabilities compared with the version of Siri currently used by many users. Nevertheless, Apple is said to still face challenges in catching up with the capabilities of AI assistants that have already been developed earlier by other technology companies.
