Apple Music reportedly to label AI-generated music

Apple is reportedly set to embed a ‘Made With AI’ label to mark music on Apple Music that has been created using generative artificial intelligence (AI) technology.

According to Engadget on Thursday (20/8) local time, the label will be displayed on music where part of the material in the content was made by generative AI. It is not yet known when the label will begin to be applied and how much AI usage will ultimately require a song to be labelled.

Previously, Apple introduced Transparency Tags, which give AI-generated songs a special marker so that listeners can know that the music they are listening to was created with the help of AI.

If realised, ‘Made With AI’ will make the labelling of AI-generated music more official and structured on Apple Music.

The use of generative AI is increasingly affecting the creative industry, including music. A number of major record companies have even called for music that is mass-produced using AI and considered low quality to be excluded from global music charts.

On the other hand, several online music streaming services are beginning to develop technology to recognise music created using AI. Deezer, for example, has introduced a number of AI-generated music detection features.

Meanwhile, other platforms have taken different approaches in dealing with the development of AI-based music, ranging from limiting its distribution to opening up greater space for content created with the technology.
