Jakarta — Minister of Investment and Downstreaming/Head of the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) Rosan has revealed progress on Apple's investment plans in Batam. According to Rosan, Apple has purchased land in Batam to invest through its vendors.

Rosan said the Ministry of Investment and Downstreaming/BKPM has been one of the parties driving Apple's investment entry into Indonesia.

"We are also one of those pushing Apple to come in, and they have actually purchased land in Batam to invest through their vendors. Going forward, several Apple vendors will also be entering Batam Island. So the prospects are truly extraordinary," Rosan said at the Ministry of Investment and Downstreaming/BKPM office in Jakarta.

Rosan also noted that Batam is an attractive area for investors in the digital infrastructure sector, particularly data centres. The extensive land available in Batam is said to enable digital sector development.

"In Singapore, land is already extremely limited. So they have already imposed a moratorium on digital infrastructure. As a result, many now want to enter Batam, especially in data centres," he said.

Meanwhile, Head of the Batam Free Trade Zone and Free Port Authority (BP KPBPB) Amsakar Achmad revealed that there is another sector attracting investor interest: electrical power. He said investors are beginning to eye the development of solar home systems (SHS) being developed in Batam.

However, Amsakar acknowledged that challenges remain regarding land and forest areas.

"There is still one problem, particularly concerning land and forests. We will resolve this gradually. But if just these two come in, God willing, the economic activity in Batam will be extraordinary," Amsakar said.

Amsakar also mentioned that Batam has a Special Economic Zone (KEK) in the health sector currently in the process of completion. This KEK is a collaboration with Mayapada. Additionally, Apple has committed to investing in Batam.

"The Health KEK will be built in Sekupang, in collaboration with Mayapada. Hopefully, out of the five or six investors coming in, including Apple — Apple has already committed to entering the Tunas industrial zone," he added.
