Apple Cuts Costs, iPhone 18 to Use iPhone 14 Display
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - The specifications of the iPhone 18, potentially launching this year, are not entirely new and top-of-the-line. Apple is reportedly using an older OLED material that was employed nearly four years ago for the standard version of the lineup.
The material in question is Samsung’s M12+. Gizmochina reports that this display is a modified version of the M12 used in the iPhone 14 Pro and Galaxy S23 Ultra.
However, not everything will use outdated technology. The iPhone 18 Pro model will utilise Samsung’s M16, cited on Friday (24/4/2026).
This means there will be a quite significant difference, including the panels used in current iPhones, which are far more advanced than those in the iPhone 18.
Gizmochina reports that the biggest difference lies in efficiency, namely the amount of power required to achieve a certain brightness level. Panels with new technology have better capabilities regarding power efficiency.
The efficiency improvements from the A20 chip, built on a 2nm process, won’t help much if the display doesn’t support similar advancements. Another option for Apple could be to use a larger battery.
However, this information remains mere rumour. Apple never truly discloses device specifications until the launch day.
So, we need to wait until the iPhone 18 is unveiled to the public later.
Meanwhile, the iPhone 18 is rumoured to launch only in spring or September 2027. If this news is true, Apple will skip a full calendar year without a new non-Pro iPhone for the first time.
As such, the iPhone 17 will remain the latest lineup for 18 months before its successor is officially launched.
