Apple Agrees to Pay iPhone Users Up to Rp 1.6 Million
Apple has finally agreed to pay a settlement to iPhone users. The company, headquartered in Cupertino, USA, is prepared to pay a total of 250 million US dollars (approximately Rp 4.3 trillion). Meanwhile, the amount to be paid for each device is estimated to reach 25 US dollars to 95 US dollars (approximately Rp 433,000 to Rp 1.6 million). This compensation is being provided after a group of iPhone users filed a class-action lawsuit against the company. The lawsuit was filed last March. They sued because Apple delayed the launch of the personalised virtual assistant Siri feature. However, this feature had already been announced at the Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) 2024. The lawsuit also stated that Apple “flooded the internet, television, and various other media to build clear and reasonable expectations that these features would be available when the iPhone was released.” Although it has agreed to the settlement money, Apple does not admit any fault. Apple stated that they “acted in good faith and in a manner believed to comply with all applicable rules, regulations, and laws.” “Since the launch of Apple Intelligence, we have delivered dozens of features in various languages integrated across the Apple platform, relevant to users’ daily activities, and built with privacy protections at every stage,” said an Apple spokesperson. “These features include Visual Intelligence, Live Translation, Writing Tools, Genmoji, Clean Up, and many more,” the spokesperson added, quoted by KompasTekno from 9to5Mac. The compensation amount is 25 US dollars for each eligible device. However, this amount may vary depending on the number of claims filed by eligible users. If the claim submission percentage is very high, the payment value could be lower. Meanwhile, the maximum payment limit is 95 US dollars per device. To file a claim, users must provide proof of purchase of the eligible device, such as the device serial number, Apple account information, and phone number. This settlement has received preliminary approval today, and claim filing notifications will be sent within 45 days. It should be noted that this compensation is only provided for users in the US, where the lawsuit was filed.
