Apple accidentally leaks how camera-equipped AirPods work

Apple has inadvertently leaked details of how its AirPods with cameras work, a product still under development that may debut in the near future.

The news was first reported by MacRumors on Monday (17/8) local time, which discovered it through promotional video material for macOS Tahoe 26.7.

In a short demo shown in the video, a man holds up a book so that the camera in the AirPods can read the book’s title.

The feature is called Visual Intelligence, and a voice-over clarifies how it works.

“With Visual Intelligence, your world can be saved. See something you like? Just ask me to save it for later,” the voice-over says.

There is also a direct reference to configuring Visual Intelligence on the AirPods so it can run optimally.

If hair covers the AirPods, users will receive a notification to ensure the camera is not obstructed.

“To get the most accurate information about things around you, make sure the AirPods are not covered,” the written terms of use for the AirPods state.

The appearance of how camera-equipped AirPods work via the latest macOS promotional material reinforces earlier reports.

The latest report, as conveyed by Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, says Apple’s AirPods with cameras remain on track according to the roadmap and have not been delayed.

Gurman believes the AirPods could launch as early as September 2026, alongside the introduction of the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and iPhone Ultra, which will be Apple’s first foldable phone.

In macOS Tahoe 26.7, besides the AirPods with code B790, there are several mentions of other unreleased Apple products, including smart home accessories, a range of new headphones, and Apple Intelligence specifically for the Chinese market.
