Appeal to Muslims
Appeal to Muslims
From Media Indonesia
Having regard to the current critical situation in the
country, which is becoming increasingly critical particularly
concerning the Muslim community in Indonesia, we appeal to the
ulemas, political party leaders and the leaders of Islamic mass
organizations to adopt clear thinking in order to find prudent
solutions to all of the nation's problems.
In this context we would like to make the following
suggestions:
1. The ulemas, leaders of Islamic political parties, and leaders
of Islamic organizations should refrain from holding mass rallies
using Islamic banners but lacking clear-cut objectives. Also, all
actions in relation to labor day, May 1, should be conducted in
such a way that Muslims are not co-opted into the effort of
fooling the people in the name of Islam.
2. Muslims should be quick to react to any move in which one side
is played off against the other with the result that Muslims
become divided among themselves.
3. We call on all Muslims to enhance their devotion to God and to
say more prayers for the well-being of the people.
4. All Islamic political and social leaders should restrain
themselves from making controversial statements that tend to
confuse the people. Moreover, if they use religious norms
incorrectly, this will only hinder our efforts to create a
peaceful and conducive atmosphere.
5. All Muslims should remain critical so as to exercise control
over the behavior and performance of those in power, but such
criticism should always be made in good faith as prescribed by
Islamic teaching.
