Appeal Court Increases Compensation Penalty for Riza Chalid's Son to IDR 13.4 Trillion
The DKI Jakarta High Court has delivered its appeal verdict for corruption defendant Muhamad Kerry Adrianto Riza, the son of oil corruption fugitive Riza Chalid. The defendant’s 15-year prison sentence was upheld. “Sentencing the Defendant to 15 years’ imprisonment,” said presiding judge Budi Susilo as he read the appeal ruling at the DKI Jakarta High Court in Cempaka Putih, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday (10/6/2026).
The judges imposed a fine of IDR 500 million, subsidiary to 140 days of confinement. This fine is lower than the verdict from the Central Jakarta Corruption Court, which was IDR 1 billion. The appellate judges subsequently increased Kerry’s compensation payment to IDR 13,406,493,622,901 (IDR 13.4 trillion). The breakdown includes compensation for state losses amounting to IDR 2,906,493,622,901 (IDR 2.9 trillion) and state economic losses of IDR 10.5 trillion. “In the event that the convicted person does not have sufficient assets to pay the compensation, they shall be sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment,” the judge stated.
Previously, Kerry was sentenced to 15 years in prison, a fine of IDR 1 billion subsidiary to 190 days of confinement, and an additional penalty of paying compensation of IDR 2,905,420,003,854 subsidiary to 5 years in prison. In its first-instance verdict, the panel of judges at the Central Jakarta Corruption Court stated that the element of state financial loss in the crude oil governance corruption case had been fulfilled. The judges noted state financial losses of IDR 9.4 trillion in the case, based on calculations by the Supreme Audit Agency (BPK).
“Based on the results of the investigative audit report by the BPK, conducted to calculate state financial losses in oil governance at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, there were state financial losses at PT Pertamina of IDR 2,545,277,386,935, which is part of the total state financial loss from the sale of non-subsidised diesel by PT Pertamina and PT PPN for the years 2018-2023 amounting to IDR 9,415,196,905,676.86,” said judge member Sigit Herman Binaji. The court also stated that the calculation of state economic losses totalling IDR 171 trillion remained an assumption, deeming it unreal and uncertain.
