Regret envelops two women with the initials NR and MT. These women from Lebak, Banten, now face the threat of imprisonment after making a vow by stepping on the Qur’an.

NR and MT have been designated as suspects in the alleged religious blasphemy case. They have also been detained by the police since last week.

While undergoing detention for further legal proceedings, both suspects have admitted their actions were wrong and have apologised.

“The suspects admit (their fault) and have apologised,” said the Head of Public Relations of Banten Police, Commissioner Maruli Hutapea, to reporters on Tuesday (14/4/2026).

Police are still investigating the alleged religious desecration case that occurred on Wednesday (8/4). He stated that currently, police have only named two suspects.

“For now, only two suspects. And investigators will delve deeper,” he said.

The two are friends.

NR and MT are friends. They were secured by police after a video of stepping on the Qur’an went viral on social media.

The Public Relations Officer of Lebak Police Resort, First Inspector Moestafa Ibnu Syafir, said the case began when NR felt she had lost her makeup tools after purchasing them via e-commerce. NR suspected MT of taking the makeup items, namely powder and perfume.

“So, they are actually friends; the salon owner ordered the package and it was stored. The owner accused the initial MT, and since not satisfied with the admission, they then performed the Qur’an vow,” said Moestafa.

Both women were secured to prevent any unwanted incidents after the video of swearing while stepping on the Qur’an went viral on social media.

“We secured both parties as quickly as possible to avoid unwanted matters,” said Moestafa.

The police urge the public not to be provoked regarding this case. In investigating the case, the police will proceed transparently and professionally.

The issue of missing makeup.

This case stemmed from a problem of missing makeup tools. They are suspected of committing religious blasphemy after NR was seen forcing MT to swear by stepping on the Qur’an.

The Public Relations Officer of Lebak Police Resort, First Inspector Moestafa Ibnu Syafir, said the case was triggered by an issue involving makeup tools in the form of powder and perfume, ordered by NR online. Without clear basis, NR accused MT of taking her makeup tools.

“So, they are actually friends; the salon owner ordered the package and it was stored. The owner accused the initial MT, and since not satisfied with the admission, they then performed the Qur’an vow,” explained Moestafa.

He said both suspects consciously committed religious blasphemy by stepping on the Qur’an. Not only that, the way they performed the vow with the Qur’an was not in accordance with the provisions.

“The way of the Qur’an vow is also not like that, and what aggravates it is the holy book of the Qur’an; for a vow, it should be above the head, not under the feet,” he said.

“They intentionally committed clear religious blasphemy. The motive is clear because they know the Qur’an is a holy book, unless they are not Muslim,” he added.

Moestafa suggested that if there is a dispute over alleged theft, it is better to report it to the police, so that such incidents do not recur.

“The one ordered and the one ordering are both wrong; just pursue it legally,” he said.
