The Indonesian Oil, Gas, and Geothermal Drilling Contractors Association (APMI) is supporting the reactivation of idle wells to boost national oil and gas production. APMI Chairman Suprijonggo Santoso stated that efforts by SKK Migas to reactivate idle wells and fields deserve backing, noting that there are tens of thousands of old idle wells in Indonesia that could increase output. SKK Migas recorded that by the end of 2025, there were more than 17,000 oil and gas wells in Indonesia with idle or shut-in status. The majority are located in mature fields in Java, Sumatra, and Kalimantan. Many of these wells still have economically recoverable reserves if reactivated, at a cost far lower than drilling new wells. However, most idle wells are in locations difficult to access with large conventional rigs. Therefore, APMI is initiating drilling equipment suited to the geographical characteristics, infrastructure, and national needs, namely the Sinergy Lean Innovative Modular Rig (SLIM Rig). With the SLIM Rig, thousands of idle wells that have been dormant can be revived efficiently and affordably. This is expected to support the independence of the national drilling industry, reduce import dependency, lower operational costs, and provide a greater economic impact for the domestic industry, ultimately fostering pride and confidence that Indonesians can play a role in the oil, gas, and geothermal drilling industry. Separately, fabrication industry player Ir. Doddy Suherman said that many oil drilling tools used in Indonesia are outdated, still from the 1980s, while other parts of the world are already using more advanced equipment. He said exploration needs to be carried out by adapting to Indonesia’s geographical conditions, which include many mountains, forests, and seas, and that he and his team have tried to create a simple modular drilling rig.
