The Indonesian Mining Association (API-IMA) has emphasised the importance of clarity in the transition of mineral export governance amid government efforts to strengthen oversight and control of strategic national commodities.

The government has been pushing for improvements in mineral and coal export governance as part of strengthening downstreaming, increasing domestic value addition, and maintaining national revenue stability from the natural resources sector. Industry players believe clear mechanisms are needed to ensure business activities and trade contracts continue optimally.

API-IMA Executive Director Sari Esayanti stated that businesses require clear guidelines during policy transitions to avoid disruptions in business negotiations. ‘Clarity is needed to ensure critical company negotiations proceed smoothly for business sustainability and market stability,’ she said in a statement on Monday, 25 May 2026.

She added that as a strategic sector underpinning the national economy, the mining industry requires certainty in reporting processes and the involvement of the Directorate General of Minerals and Coal at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) in export governance.

API-IMA also highlighted the importance of respecting existing long-term and short-term sales contracts. Certainty and consistency in contract implementation are crucial to maintaining business continuity and protecting investments already made in the mining sector.

She noted that policy stability is vital for preserving market confidence and supporting the government’s mineral downstreaming agenda.
