KUALA LUMPUR (AP): The Malaysian shirtmaker, Tjanting
Handicraft, that outfitted leaders from Pacific Rim nations in
bold batik shirts for a summit last year is suing a women's
magazine for implying the shirts were ugly, news reports said on
Wednesday.
During the November summit of the Asia Pacific Economic
Cooperation in the Malaysian capital, leaders donned batik shirts
with bright geometric and floral designs. The shirts, which were
handpicked by Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, cost US$160 each.
In the Style column of its February edition, Wanita (woman)
magazine insinuated that the custom-made shirts had clashing
colors and were "either too loose and sagging or too tight", said
Shamsul Bahrain, a lawyer representing the company.
