Anyer traders enraged by demolition
JAKARTA: Around 300 traders in Anyer market, Banten, reacted
angrily after their kiosks were damaged by the local
administration early on Thursday.
The traders burned tires in the street passing through the
market, preventing motorists from going to and from Anyer, a
tourist resort in the province.
Security personnel were deployed to clear the blockade but
were forced to withdraw after failing to disperse hundreds of
traders blocking the road.
The local administration demolished the kiosks in an attempt
to make traders move to a new market.
Many shops near the scene closed, fearing major rioting.
The traders said they declined to move to the new market
because they could not afford to buy the kiosks, which are being
offered at a price of Rp 11 million. --Antara
