Anxiety Persists for Tambora Residents as Street Brawls Continue to Recur

JAKARTA — A brawl between groups of youths recurred on Jalan Bandengan Utara, Pekojan, Tambora, West Jakarta, on Friday (15/5/2026). A group of youths engaged in a motorcycle chase that resulted in a crash, slashing attacks, and the theft of a vehicle. The incident, captured on CCTV and widely shared on social media, triggered panic among residents who suspected a robbery was taking an active role.

The event began at approximately 04:49 WIB when a white motorcycle carrying three men was pursued by a group of youths armed with sharp weapons. Wawan, a local security officer, stated that the chase reportedly originated from Jalan Jembatan Tiga Raya, Penjaringan, North Jakarta. “They were chasing each other until they reached this area. The incident occurred when the motorcycle hit an electric pole and crashed into a rubbish bin, which was destroyed,” Wawan explained at the scene on Sunday (17/5/2026).

After the motorcycle struck the pole and the riders fell, the three victims were surrounded by the attackers. CCTV footage shows a mob of approximately 11 individuals on five motorcycles wielding various sizes of ‘celurit’ (traditional sickles). Although the three youths attempted to flee, they were struck by blades from behind. Following the attack, the group fled with the victims’ white motorcycle before escaping in the opposite direction towards Penjaringan. Wawan confirmed that neither the victims nor the perpetrators were recognised by local residents. While the theft of the motorcycle initially led residents to suspect a robbery, AKP Sudrajat Djumantara, Head of Criminal Investigation at the Tambora Police Sector, has dismissed the robbery theory.
