Anwar Usman Insists MK Ruling 90 Is Not for Gibran: This Is for All Young People
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Former Constitutional Court (MK) Justice Anwar Usman has once again addressed the controversy surrounding MK Ruling No. 90/PUU-XXI/2023, which regulates the age requirements for presidential and vice-presidential candidates. The ruling previously drew widespread public attention for opening opportunities for individuals under 40 years old to run in the presidential election, provided they have previously or are currently holding an elected position, including as regional heads. “(Ruling 90) indeed has no connection to Gibran. It is not a door for Gibran. It is for all young people. That is the mistake in perception,” Anwar said when met after his retirement on Monday (13/4/2026). He described his departure from the institution as a clean start, free from the burdens that had previously attached to it. “I feel relieved. I am leaving the MK like a baby, like a blank sheet of paper,” he stated. Anwar also touched on the ongoing controversy related to the ruling. He noted that many parties have not yet “moved on” from MK Ruling 90, which continues to be a subject of public debate to this day. In addition, Anwar addressed various issues that had circulated, including allegations of interference by certain parties and issues regarding the flow of funds. He admitted to being surprised by the development of such information but affirmed that clarifications have been provided. Furthermore, Anwar linked the controversy to the State Administrative Court (PTUN) Jakarta ruling that partially granted his lawsuit. That decision also restored Anwar Usman’s honour, dignity, and good name as a justice, although it did not grant the demand for his reinstatement as MK Chief Justice. “The PTUN Jakarta ruling, which states that my rights are restored, honour, dignity, and good name—that is the main thing,” he explained. Anwar emphasised that the restoration of his good name is a very important matter for him. He even expressed his concern if that did not happen while he was still alive.
