Anwar trial postponed

KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters): The sex trial of former Malaysian finance minister Anwar Ibrahim was adjourned on Monday for two weeks after his lawyers asked for more time to prepare their case for calling Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad as a witness.

High Court judge Arifin Jaka adjourned the trial until March 6 after Anwar's lawyers said they also needed the rest of the week to prepare Anwar's appeal against an earlier conviction for corruption.

Arifin had earlier given the defense until Tuesday to submit an affidavit, or written arguments, on why it wanted Mahathir to take the witness stand in the sex trial.

But Anwar's chief counsel Christopher Fernando told the High Court on Monday that the defense needed more time.
