Anwar remains defiant in jail
KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): One year after he was fired, former deputy
prime minister Anwar Ibrahim has emerged as Malaysia's most
prominent dissident, campaigning from behind bars for the ousting
of Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad.
"Anwar has shown tremendous courage," his wife Azizah Ismail,
president of the National Justice Party, said.
Anwar, 52, once Mahathir's heir apparent, was dismissed on
Sept. 2, 1998, and has been behind bars since he was arrested 18
days later under the country's Internal Security Act.
