Anwar Ibrahim, Traditional Sandals, and Messages from the BRICS Stage
Amidst the rows of formal dark suits and polished loafers that typically dominate global diplomatic spaces, a sight immediately captured attention during the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi, India. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim appeared distinct, wearing full Baju Melayu.
The light grey traditional attire was paired with a blue-purple patterned songket samping, a black songkok, and traditional capal sandals. This appearance served as a strong statement of cultural identity on the global geopolitical stage as he met with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
In the warm bilateral meeting, PM Anwar Ibrahim emphasised the importance of accelerating the realisation of direct flights between Malaysia and Russia. This step is considered crucial for boosting the tourism, trade, and investment sectors.
“I raised the need to accelerate efforts to realise direct flights between Malaysia and Russia as well as visa-free travel facilities as previously agreed,” Anwar Ibrahim stated in a release on Saturday (12/9/2026).
Beyond connectivity, the two leaders discussed strengthening cooperation in strategic sectors, particularly energy. Anwar expressed appreciation for Russia’s support regarding existing energy cooperation, expressing belief that the expertise of both nations could be synergised for mutual benefit.
The trade sector was also a primary focus, specifically regarding efforts to increase Malaysian palm oil exports to the Russian market. Anwar aims to double the value of bilateral trade through concrete steps on the ground.
The meeting concluded with the reiteration of an invitation from the King of Malaysia, Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim, to President Vladimir Putin to undertake a State Visit to Malaysia in the future.
This bilateral meeting marks a new chapter in the diplomatic relations between the two nations, focusing not only on trade figures but also on respect for the cultural sovereignty of each nation.
