Anwar Ibrahim Suddenly Phones Jokowi, What's Going On?

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim reportedly contacted Indonesia’s 7th President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) before attending the Malaysia Agriculture, Horticulture and Agrotourism Show (MAHA) 2026. The communication took place while Jokowi was in Penang to attend the Penang Peace Dialogue.

Anwar revealed this through a post on his personal Instagram account. He said he had contacted Jokowi, whom he described as an old friend, before proceeding with his agenda at MAHA 2026.

“This morning, before attending MAHA 2026, I took the opportunity to contact my old friend and former President of the Republic of Indonesia, Mr Joko Widodo,” Anwar wrote, as quoted on Monday (7/9/2026).

Anwar explained that he had actually hoped to meet Jokowi in person in Penang. However, a previously scheduled agenda with farmers, livestock breeders, and the agro community at MAHA 2026 meant the meeting could not take place.

“I apologise for not being able to meet Mr Jokowi in person there, given the prior commitments with farmers, livestock breeders, and the agro community at MAHA 2026,” Anwar said.

Although they did not meet in person, Anwar said he and Jokowi continued to exchange messages in a warm atmosphere. In that communication, Anwar also conveyed solidarity with the Indonesian people who are facing volcanic eruption disasters and haze problems.

“I also conveyed solidarity to our brothers and sisters in Indonesia regarding the volcanic eruption disaster and the haze problem they are currently facing,” he said.

Anwar stressed that the relationship between Malaysia and Indonesia is not merely one between neighbouring countries. According to him, the two nations share strong historical, cultural, and fraternal bonds.

“Positions and titles may change, but friendship and mutual respect will remain,” he wrote.

Finally, Anwar expressed hope that the good relationship will continue to be maintained despite changes in positions and titles in both countries.

“God willing, this bond will continue to be nurtured for the welfare of the people of both countries and for the peace and prosperity of the region,” Anwar concluded.
